What is an IRA?
An IRA is a tax-advantaged investment vehicle that is designed to help you save towards retirement.
There are two main types of IRAs: The traditional IRA and the Roth IRA. The primary difference between the two relates to the tax breaks these accounts offer.

Traditional IRA
A traditional IRA is a tax-deferred retirement investment account. You pay taxes on your money only when you make withdrawals in retirement. Deferring taxes means all of your dividends, interest payments and capital gains can compound each year without being hindered by taxes.

Roth IRA
A Roth IRA is a retirement investment account that allows your money to grow tax deferred. You fund a Roth with after-tax dollars, meaning you've already paid taxes on the money you put into it. In return for no up-front tax break, your money grows and grows tax-deferred, and when you make qualified withdrawals at or near retirement, you pay no taxes.

Invest toward your future
An IRA remains an effective way to save for retirement. Every year counts, the earlier you start making your contributions the more opportunity you have for your earnings to compound.

In both traditional and Roth IRAs the investments in your IRA grow tax-deferred, meaning you owe nothing on the gains, while the money remains in the IRA.

Build beyond your 401(k)
IRAs allow individuals to contribute up to $5,500 per year; that’s on top of what you can invest annually in your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plans. Note that tax contributions are only tax deductible within certain income limits.

Traditional IRAs are funded with tax deductible contributions in which any earnings are tax deferred until withdrawn, usually after retirement age. Unless certain criteria are met, IRS penalties and income taxes may apply on any withdrawals taken from Traditional IRAs prior to age 59 1/2. RMDs (required minimum distributions) must generally be taken by the account holder within the year after turning 70 1⁄2.

The Roth IRA offers tax deferral on any earnings in the account. Withdrawals from the account may be tax free, as long as they are considered qualified. Limitations and restrictions may apply. Withdrawals prior to age 59 1⁄2 or prior to the account being opened for 5 years, whichever is later, may result in a 10% IRS penalty tax. Future tax laws can change at any time and may impact the benefits of Roth IRAs. Their tax treatment may change.
